The Shrewsbury to Ludlow Railway Part 2

On part two of my journey I move southwards from Church Stretton to discover how Craven Arms and Ludlow Stations have changed over the years. I also hunt out the old former stations at Marshbrook, Onibury and Bromfield.
The Shrewsbury to Ludlow Railway Part 1
Просмотров 6 тыс.6 лет назад
On this journey around Shropshire's current and disused railways, I travel from the county town of Shrewsbury down to historic Ludlow. In part one I travel southwards to Church Stretton and we discover how Shrewsbury and Church Stretton Stations have changed through the years. We also go and find the disused stations of Condover, Dorrington and Leebotwood.
Eardington Station Open Day September 2017
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.6 лет назад
Eardington Station opens its doors at the SVR's Autumn Steam Festival. As this station is never used as such, it creates a fantastic opportunity to view and film trains passing through a station at 'speed' and not stopping. The day also gave me a chance to ride a rail inspector's Velocipede on the second line of the station. Also featured in this video is a detailed look at the work of a statio...

World War Two broke out at the Telford Steam Railway on August Bank Holiday Weekend 2017. Real action amongst the trains as the Allied troops successfully capture enemy soldiers!
Whitchurch to Chester Disused Railway
Просмотров 16 тыс.6 лет назад
This latest rail exploration takes me mainly into Cheshire, but what was still an important part of the Shropshire Rail Network in the last century. This was yet another route built to compete with another railway company. Like many before, it was destined to make a financial loss right from the off. It's history generally matches those of all the other disused lines in Shropshire. To find out ...
Cambrian Railways update Oswestry August 2017
Просмотров 22 тыс.6 лет назад
I returned to the Cambrian Railway at Oswestry in August 2017 to see the line extension south of the station. It was really pleasing to see the progress being made here. The line is destined to go further south, can't wait.
Blodwell Junction Disused Railways Part 2 Nantmawr to Llanymynech
Просмотров 10 тыс.7 лет назад
In part two of this Shropshire rail exploration I discover the former quarry and passenger line from Nantmawr down to Llanymynech. The highlight is the fantastic level crossing near to Nantmawr.
Blodwell Junction Disused Railways Part 1
Просмотров 17 тыс.7 лет назад
On this Shropshire journey I explore the mainly quarry railways in the borders area to the north west of Llanymynech. In part one I look at the line to Blodwell Junction that branches off the former Oswestry to Welshpool line.
Bewdley to Hartlebury Junction Disused Railway
Просмотров 40 тыс.7 лет назад
A journey to discover the southern end of the Severn Valley Railway. The SVR was built to join Shrewsbury to Worcester with the link to Kidderminster coming later providing an East/West link across the South Shropshire border. This journey takes us through Stourport on Severn where the lines history is preserved with a public footpath nearly all the way from the centre of Stourport to the junct...
Oswestry to Welshpool Disused Railway lost stations
Просмотров 53 тыс.7 лет назад
I go back to explore the Cambrian Railway Line from Oswestry to Welshpool once again in an effort to discover more about the lost stations on this route. With the aid of pictorial evidence I am able to piece together more successfully the history of this railway on the Shropshire/Powis border.
Shrewsbury to Bridgnorth Disused Railway (Part 2 remake) Ironbridge to Bridgnorth
Просмотров 58 тыс.7 лет назад
This is a remake of Part 2 using some original, but mainly new footage. This video includes Coalport and Linley Stations which were missing on the original video. There are also extra pictures and aerial photographs in this edition.
Madeley Junction to Lightmoor Disused Railway
Просмотров 12 тыс.7 лет назад
On this journey I explore what came to be known as the 'Power Station Line' down to Ironbridge Power Station. Originally this was a mainly freight line serving the Ironworks in the Lightmoor and Horsehay areas. Lightmoor later became a junction when the line from Wellington to Buildwas opened. The power station closed in November 2015 thus making this Shropshire's newest disused railway.
Didcot Railway Museum in pictures

I recently visited Didcot Railway Museum next to the GWR, soon after it's television appearance in 'Trainspotting Live' on 11th to 13th July 2016 on BBC 4. This is a fairly large, mainly outdoor, museum with a relatively high number of railway vehicles and artefacts; definitely well worth a visit if you have an interest in railways.
The Border's Railway re-visited 2016
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.7 лет назад
I re-visited the Border's Railway this summer, two years after exploring some of the construction sites in 2014. I take time out at Newtongrange and Galashiels to see the completed developments, particularly the new transport hub in Galashiels itself. The journey down from Edinburgh is very pleasant as you roll peacefully through lovely countryside. The half hourly service is brilliant, so well...

At Woofferton There was a line that branched out to the right, this line went to Cleobury Mortimer then split into 2 lines, imagine looking at that split, you have Ditton priors to the left and Bewdley to the right

We used to live very near to this old Power station line at Hartlebury, Remember very well Class 25s and the odd class 37 taking coal in from the Hartlebury end down to the Power station, This was mainly done late Afternoon / Evening" and the trains always travelled slow on the Line, We lived at Poolands farm until 1983 and it Overlooked the Line" so we always saw many coal trains back and forth, Thank you for the share, Happy times in that area.👍

Another who's just discovered this channel, and sorry to hear of author's passing - great vids. Often caught bus from Malpas to Chester in late '60s / early 70s, and Malpas station was a good mile-and-a-half from the town. Bus went over railway bridge at station where trackbed still 'fresh' after lifting of the line. Feature for many years after was the modern steel railway bridge over the A41 at Chowley Crossing near Tattenhall which our double decker only just seemed to squeeze under. Our bus crew on the C58 (conductor Archie Smith - a real character - and much quieter driver Bill) worked out of Whitchurch and came across to Crosville in the mid-60s after the mass closure of the Cambrian mainline & branches, where they'd worked as Fireman & Driver on the steam engines. I believe someone interviewed a number of these characters - great social history record, but can't find online again for the life of me.

He sat in a hut by thegates . He had st vitas dance syndrome and he did not quite open the gates on time and a bubble car DMU. Eent through the closed gate knocking the gate man flying . But surved the incident . Luckily. Just before closure in 1960s. 😅

Of course there is no way the line will ever be re-instated from Ironbridge to Bridgnorth, from Ironbridge south, the land is suffering from rotational slips, the soggy ground is making its way to the Severn, a problem the GWR had yonks ago, you will need a bridge to get from the western tunnel mouth to Bridgnorth station, this was taken out decades ago because of the low height restriction. Also approaching Bridgnorth tunnel mouth, the trackbed is now a road through a housing estate. Who would pay for this anyway, who would look after the permanent way, the SVR have more than enough on their plate for the existing mileage. A new station with run round, would have to be built on the car park at Ironbridge, not to mention an engine house and space for stabling a set of carriages for the first train out, oh and a signal box, or at least a ground frame, then crossing gates need to be operated along the line, it will never happen, so just enjoy this lovely film, dream a bit, press the like button as I have.

Classic lack of foresight - men sweated and in many cases lost their lives building these lines, Dr Beeching closed many of them and 50 years later they've put half of this one back again at massive cost.

It’s almost like when all of the lines closed under Beeching, it was a definitive effort to make a statement that railways were in the past and huge effort to prevent any possibility to bring them back into service. When you think of all of the greed and corruption in the high echelons of the political realm I’ll bet that many brown envelopes and back handers exchanged during the 60s
